The Charles H. W. Foster Collection was received in 1957 from the estate of Charles H. W. Foster, Harvard University graduate and well-known yachtsman. Foster owned and experimented with an extraordinary number of yachts over his lifetime and participated in the design of several of his own yachts. A longtime member and a commodore of the Eastern Yacht Club in Marblehead, Massachusetts, Foster wrote the Eastern Yacht Club Ditty Box, the first history of this prestigious club. The collection consists of 5 half models, 46 books, and approximately 4300 photographs by Stebbins, Jackson, and Peabody, depicting yachts and some commercial vessels between the years 1885 and 1930.
