Description
Uncolored map of the Isle of Man from an edition of 'The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine' by John Speed published by Thomas Bassett and Richard Chiswell after Speed's death. Elaborate strapwork cartouches flank the map in the center. The cartouches frame the title and authors of the map, and a short history and coats of arms of the island. A compass rose is at the center of the map. Rhumb lines cut across the map. In the zig-zag shaded waters, there are ships, a naval battle, and maidens riding sea monsters. Text on verso, but obscured by mounting.
